This is a sketch I did of a Japanese dive instructor friend of mine in Port Vila, Vanuatu. Saki is a real character in her own right and in this instance she was doing about 3 dives every single day which is bloody exhausting for anybody. Between each dive she would curl up and sleep on anything. If she wasn’t underwater she would be either asleep on some odd object or drawing her food. She showed me her sketchbook when I first met her that was full of really nice drawings but all the pictures were of food she’d eaten and to me, that was absolutely bizarre! She also has a really weird walk, which is like that of the land crabs there.

We used to dive this neat ship wreck quite a bit which I nicknamed the ‘Kan’o’Tuna’ because I couldn’t pronounce the ships real name. The ship lies about 70 feet under water and during one of the dives with Saki, I found the Kan’o’tuna’ toilet deep within and it was just way too irresistible not to sit on it. Fortunately for her and the fish, my wetsuit didn’t have a zipper!
